Saira Mirza-Disgraced Worksheet

1.Describe the stasis in the play: where, when, who, what, etc. in a paragraph.
The play takes place during the late summer of 2011. There are scenes that take place 3 months and 6 months later. We are in Amir Kapoor and his wife Emily's apartment in the upper east side of Manhattan, New York. Amir is a Pakistani American man who is a Muslim apostate. He works very hard in a law firm and seems to make a lot of money. Emily is a white female artist who is inspired by Islamic art. She is more accepting of the Islamic religion than Amir. The play starts with Amir posing pants-less for Emily's painting, inspired by a Spanish panting of a slave. Abe, Amir's nephew, then walks in and requests Amir to support an Imam who has been accused of giving terrorists money. Abe is also a Muslim but at first he is shown to be "American" with his clothing and his name change from Hussein to Abe. When the play nears the end he is shown wearing traditional Islamic clothing and advocating his beliefs for the religion. Other characters of this play include Isaac, a Jewish art dealer who had a one night stand with Emily even though they are both married. Jory is Isaac's wife and a coworker of Amir's. She is African American and later receives the promotion that Amir had hoped to be his.

2. What is the intrusion?
I thought the intrusion is when The New York Times posts the article where it seems that Amir is supporting the imam accused of helping terrorists. This causes Amir to be seen as a Muslim to his coworkers which damages his reputation. He now becomes suspicious in the eyes of his superiors and eventually is fired for lying about where his parents were born. This becomes the reason of his aggression in the dinner party and leads him to be violent towards Emily, causing her to leave him.

3. What is the unique factor?
This is the day that Amir loses his identity. He loses his wife, job, and who is really is.

4. What is the dramatic question that should be answered by the end of the play?
Will Amir accept Islam? Will Amir get promoted or lose his job? Will Isaac and Amir have a falling out?

5. Provide an illustration of the two kinds of exposition that the play has in it.
Isaac and Jory know that Jory has been promoted to partner, and later Emily finds out, but Amir is last to know. Emily and Isaac had an affair but none of the other characters know. Only Amir knew that he had lied about his parents birth country has being India when it was really Pakistan.

6. Identify the most theatrical moment in the play and of what importance it seems to be.
I found the most theatrical moment to be when Amir hits Emily. It was very sudden and called the audiences attention. I was very surprised when it occurred.

7. List some of the themes of the play.
Identity, racism, prejudice

8. What does the chief character want and what are some obstacles that stand in the way of his getting what he wants?
Amir wants to become a partner in his firm. He works very hard in his job and tries to fit in by changing his Muslim last name to a non Muslim name Kapoor. When he supports the imam, the newspapers make it seem as if he is supporting Muslim terrorism. This then questions his integrity at work and he is fired. Jory, his friend and coworker is then given the partner position.

9. Describe some possible images in the play and how does the title help us understand the play.
Abe's outfit is the beginning and end of the play changed significantly, signifying his changed beliefs in Islam. He starts by wanting to assimilate to American culture. Then he becomes prideful and extreme in his beliefs of Islam and wears traditional Islamic clothes. The painting by Diego Velazquez of a slave that inspired Emily showed how Amir was a slave to trying to fit in and not being known as a muslim.

10. Briefly define the family relationships that are examined in the play.
One of the family relationships that are shown is the relationship of Amir and Abe. Abe is Amir's nephew which causes Amir to speak for the Imam which eventually causes the loss of Amir's job. They do not seem too close but Abe does come to Amir when he seems to need help or advice. Amir and Emily were married in a good relationship until Amir found out that Emily had an affair with Isaac, which made him hit Emily. Their relationship at the end of the play was ruined as Emily tells Amir not to contact her again.
